Transmission Questions

Coleman Taylor Transmissions has been servicing & rebuilding transmissions since 1961. Listed below are some answers to common questions that we have received.

Does the transmission come with fluid?
Is the transmission tested prior to shipping?
How much fluid does a transmission hold?
Is there a special fluid for my transmission?
Does the transmission computer have to be "flashed?"
What about cooling? Does a transmission have a radiator or cooler?
What about additives? Should I use them?
Should I add a cooler to my truck or motor home?
When should I change my transmission filter?
I have a heavy duty vehicle, when should I change my fluid and filter?
Is flushing the transmission really necessary?
My vehicle has a transmission code. Does that mean I need a new transmission?

No.
Yes, all Coleman Taylor transmissions are DYNO tested before shipping.
RWD transmissions hold from 12 qts. to 22 qts. of fluid. FWD Transmissions hold between 9 qts. & 15 qts. of the proper automatic transmission fluid.
Yes, most late model transmissions use special synthetic ATF depending on the manufacturer.
Yes, most late model transmissions are computer controlled. The PCM or TCM MUST be "flashed" when the transmission is replaced or repaired.
All late model transmissions have some sort of ATF cooling either in the radiator or externally. It is critical that the ATF cooler be properly cleaned. Blowing air through the ATF cooler will not clean any ATF cooler.
Additives are OK as long as they are designed for the fluid and the transmission you have. An additive will not fix a transmission that has failed.
If you are towing, pushing snow, or your vehicle has a heavy duty work bed, an additional cooler is highly recommended. This is one area where the "bigger the better" is true.
Most manufacturers have a "maintenance schedule" that should be followed. It is important to read this schedule to see where your driving habits and your locale will determine when you should change the fluid.
Heavy duty vehicles should have the filter and the fluid changed yearly. Flushing the entire system is a very good idea on any heavy duty vehicle, but changing the filter is just as important.
Yes, flushing the entire system is an important maintenance procedure to ensure proper vehicle performance. Make sure you have this done by a properly trained facility.
No, a transmission code can be an electrical or vehicle sensor problem.
